Portlands have a very variable fleece quality across the whole animal, from beautiful, fine, soft and long fibre, with a good crimp to shorter, harder fibre, with ginger kemp. I have been selecting for fleece quality for 9 years and can now provide top grade fibre.
The different grades can be used for different projects, but you will need several fleeces to get enough top quality fibre for a larger project. This combined with the fact that I blade shear the sheep and the fleeces don’t always come off whole, means that I pre-sort the fleece for you.
The fleece is also gently rinsed with warm water to aid sorting and remove some of the dust. The fibre still contains plenty of lanolin and can be spun direct, combed or carded. You are also paying for pure fibre (with some VM), not dirt.
